Marrakech Gardens: A Complete Guide for Nature Lovers

You’d be surprised at the number of astounding gardens there are around Marrakech. In fact, taking a stroll around these green areas is one of my favorite activities. A visit to any one of the following Marrakech Gardens is a must if you’re planning a visit to Morocco.

11 Top Gardens in Marrakech

Admittedly, I’m biased towards most of the green spaces that are an oasis in our desert city. That made curating this list of the top Gardens in Marrakech certainly difficult. However, these are my favorites:

1. Badi Palace

📍Location: Ksibat Nhass, Marrakech 40000
⌚Hours: 9 AM–5 PM
⭐Rating: 4.4 out of 5

Constructed at the end of the 16th century, Badi Palace is renowned for lavish decorations. It was designed to showcase the wealth and power of the Saadian dynasty.

The vast courtyard we see now is the same as the original, measuring roughly 1.5 hectares. The opulent site is a significant tourist attraction, where you can marvel at its architectural features.

The massive courtyard includes a long central pool (90m x 20m) and four sunken gardens. These visually appealing gardens are symmetrically arranged, reminding me of Moorish riad gardens.

I find the sophisticated plumbing system of the gardens fascinating. It feeds water to smaller rectangular basins at the corners of the courtyard, and numerous water fountains.

Don’t miss the Crystal Garden on the eastern side of the palace. It might be just remnants of the original grandeur and beauty, but it’s a wonderful part of the palace courtyard to explore. Visit in the morning for a more leisurely exploration of the ground, and avoid weekends to get away from the crowds.

2. Anima Garden

📍Location: Douar Sbiti Ourika, Marrakech
⌚Hours: 9 AM–6 PM
⭐Rating: 4.7 out of 5

Although relatively new (opened in 2016, Anima garden Marrakech is a botanical garden well worth visiting. It was created by renowned multimedia artist André Heller and spans approximately 3 hectares. I love the vibrant and imaginative design that was used to transform a barren landscape into an lush paradise.

With an emphasis on ecological sustainability, this tourist spot is very environmentally conscious. You can get a free ride from Koutoubia Mosque year round.

Once you arrive at the gardens, you can explore the diverse array of plants, wildflowers, cacti and even palm trees. Despite the lush greenery and sheer size of the place, I like that it’s meticulously landscaped and well maintained.

You should definitely check out the unique sculptures and art installations throughout the garden. It’s amazing how the gardens are cooled via several water features that also add to the tranquility of the place.

3. Majorelle Garden

📍Location: Rue Yves St Laurent, Marrakech 40090
⌚Hours: 8 AM–6:30 PM
⭐Rating: 4.4 out of 5

Another stunning botanical oasis is Jardin Majorelle, created by French artist Jacques Majorelle in 1923.

Spanning 2.5 acres, the most famous garden in Marrakech features exotic plants and I just love the serene atmosphere created by landscaping. The iconic cobalt hue (aka Majorelle Blue) beautifies the buildings and I think it adds to the garden’s tranquility.

Explore the Berber Museum for a touch of history. The garden was famously restored by Yves Saint Laurent (the fashion icon) in the 80s, so there’s a memorial on the grounds as well.

The paths always bring me peace and a sense of serenity. Water fountains around the garden add a soothing sound that offers a tranquil escape from Marrakech’s bustling streets.

4. The Menara

This captivating green space in Marrakech was established in the 12th century. I’ve always enjoyed its stunning backdrop of the Atlas Mountains from Menara Gardens. It features a large reflective pool with thousands of olive trees around it.

To make the most of your visit, try going early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Bring a picnic to a savor by the pool after exploring the iconic 19th century pavilion.

Built in the 19th century, Bahia Palace is a stunning example of Moroccan architecture and design. I love taking photos of the vibrant colors sprawling around the place, especially the gardens and courtyards.

Another establishment set within the palm grove of Palmeraie, the gardens surrounding the Musée de la Palmeraie are a must-see. The museum itself is dedicated to contemporary art, and the gardens are designed to reflect the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

The pathways meander through the gardens, which allowed me to explore the lush greenery whilst I enjoyed the spectacular view of the Atlas Mountains. The combination of art and nature makes this a distinctive destination in Marrakech.
