No visit to Marrakech is complete without going to a hammam. For those of you who don’t know, that’s like a Turkish bath. This goes way beyond the typical steam room experience in a spa.
Starting with dry heat, moving on to the steam room, and then getting a thorough massage and a vigorous scrubbing. Moroccan hammams are well-known for relaxation, stress relief, health benefits, and much more. Today, I’m reviewing the best hammam in Marrakech for you.
Public Hammams in Marrakech
After exploring the city on foot for several hours, unwinding is a must. A hammam is a traditional massage in Marrakech that also includes a spa treatment.
For an authentic experience, you’ll want to visit a public hammam. They are generally cheaper, but you’d be sharing the space with the general public. The two below are my favorites.
1. Mouassine Hammam
📍Location: Rue Sidi el Yamani, Marrakech 40000
⌚Hours: 9 AM–9 PM
⭐Rating: 4.3 out of 5
Take a step back in time by getting an authentic Moroccan experience in this ancient building. I’d say almost everyone in Marrakech is familiar with the worn walls and dimly lit interior of this timeless 16th-century hammam.
While it’s busy inside the hammam, the atmosphere inside Mouassine Hammam feels relaxed. I’m always overwhelmed by the sounds of water and the Kessa gloves scrubbing away at relaxed patrons.
While the facilities may be basic, the experience is truly unforgettable. The skilled attendants guide you through the traditional hammam ritual, from the initial steam bath to the vigorous exfoliation with black soap and a Kessa glove. You’re guaranteed to walk out feeling rejuvenated and cleansed.
Don’t get me wrong—this isn’t the most luxurious spa. However, it’s an authentic hammam, and that’s what sets it apart.
You’ll see locals using the facilities and sharing stories. It’s an opportunity to explore Moroccan culture and immerse yourself in the local way of life. I may be biased, but I truly believe it’s an unforgettable experience.
2. Hammam Essalama
📍Location: Bd Prince Moulay Abdellah, Marrakech 40000
⌚Hours: 9 AM–10 PM
⭐Rating: 4.1 out of 5
If you are looking for a more refined hammam experience without going for a tourist tap, Hammam Essalama is the best option.
This offers a little more intimate experience than the bustle inside Mouassine, and you get a little more “VIP treatment.”
This includes being scrubbed well and a ghassoul treatment for women. It’s like a full-body mud mask using clay from the Atlas mountains. Massages are optional (for a fee) but worth it.
I find this hammam to be cleaner than other public hammams and the atmosphere more relaxing. Don’t skip the complimentary mint tea at the end because it allows you to complete the real traditions that us locals follow.
The staff here are incredibly helpful, and many of my foreign friends have praised them for breaking through the language barrier.
You won’t find the place packed with foreigners, so it’ll be nice to mingle with the locals. The staff’s friendliness and hospitality will leave you feeling warm and help you enjoy the hammam so much more.
Private Hammams in Marrakech
Most tourists opt for a private hammam for a more refined experience. While they aren’t the traditional Moroccan hammams, many will provide genuinely special treatment. A private hammam is a more indulgent and relaxing bath than a shared one.
Most of these hammams are in hotels or riads, so the staff will be more attentive to your specific needs. The serene and intimate baths are more luxurious than the public hammam. Let’s take a look at the best options I found around Marrakech.
1. Le Bain Bleu Marrakech
📍Location: 32 Derb Chorfa Lekbir Mouassine Medina, Marrakech 40008
⌚Hours: 10 AM–9 PM
⭐Rating: 4.4 out of 5
One of the most luxurious hammams in all of Morocco within the heart of Medina. It’s the ultimate refined spa treatment where you can unwind and truly relax.
The ambiance here is elegant yet somehow they’ve preserved the inviting warmth of a typical hammam. There is a clear focus on relaxation. I don’t think I have ever felt so pampered. From the moment I arrived, the friendly staff guided me through the facilities. They’ve really honed the skill of tailoring the treatment for individual preferences.
The hammam itself is beautifully appointed, featuring soothing lighting and comfortable treatment rooms. The traditional hammam ritual is expertly performed by skilled therapists, ensuring a rejuvenating and relaxing experience.
I want to point out that their Beldi soap (Moroccan black soap) is of extremely high quality. I’ve seen my fair share of black soap, and this was the real deal.
While Le Bain Bleu may be more expensive than public hammams, the luxurious setting, personalized attention, and additional amenities make it a worthwhile investment for those seeking a truly indulgent and memorable experience.
2. Les Bains de Tarabel
📍Location: Dar El Bacha, 5 Derb Sraghna, Marrakech 40000
⌚Hours: 11.30 AM–7 PM
⭐Rating: 4.1 out of 5
Although the differences in technique are slight, the massage in Les Bains de Tarabel is certainly worth trying. I felt that they had honed the ancient ritual and left me with absolute relaxation.
The hammam itself is housed in an elegant riad. Service was impeccable. The staff welcomed me from the naturally lit and elegant courtyard through to the hot and steamy hammam.
I was pleased to find that the hammam was impeccably clean. The masterful hands of the staff treated me to an amazing massage and facial. The scents of the black soap and oils were wonderful, and I came out of the hammam feeling rejuvenated.
At the end of the massage, I was led to a queen-sized bed, which was a nice touch. After all, I didn’t feel like breaking the stream of tranquility I was in. Following a short nap, I was offered a selection of tea. That was a very well-appreciated touch.
This is a full spa that goes beyond the traditional Moroccan hammam. You can get a variety of treatments such as manicures and pedicures as well. They also offer several types of massage to cater to your needs and preferences.
3. Les Bains de Marrakech
📍Location: Bab Agnaou, 2 Derb Sedra, Marrakech 40000
⌚Hours: 9 AM–7 PM
⭐Rating: 4.5 out of 5
I really wanted to come here because this spa has earned a reputation for combining traditional treatments with top-notch modern amenities. This is a newly renovated hammam, so I was pleased with the luxurious facilities.
Les Bain de Marrakech stands out with its unique spa signatures. Amidst an inviting atmosphere, the staff offer packages that combine different treatments. This is a great option that allowed me to personalize my experience.
I opted for the traditional bathhouse, where I was given a deep cleansing and exfoliation followed by the expert massage. It was a sensory experience that left me feeling refreshed and renewed.
The spa’s interior is designed to create a serene and relaxing atmosphere. Think of intricate Moroccan tiles, soft lighting, and soothing music. It’s the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
The service was outstanding, and my foreign friends were pleased that the staff spoke some English. Make sure to reserve your treatments online to skip the wait. I also want to add that they do stick to the advertised time, so you get a whole 2 hours of treatment if that’s what you booked.
4. Spa Royal Mansour Marrakech
📍Location: Abou Abbas El Sebti Royal Mansour, Marrakech 40000
⌚Hours: 9 AM–9 PM
⭐Rating: 4.8 out of 5
I’ve had the chance to visit quite a few bathhouses in Marrakech. Most spas in Marrakech do offer the traditional hammam treatment, but the spa at Royal Mansour is not your average hammam.
Firstly, the luxurious palace itself is a spectacular place to be. An oasis within the bustling city, walking into the hotel was a peaceful endeavor. Soft lighting and intricate Moroccan tilework transported me back in time. It’s pure luxury from the moment you walk through the door.
Now, I’m a sucker for tradition, but let’s be honest – sometimes you want a little extra pampering. That’s where the Spa Royal Mansour shines. They offer a whole menu of treatments, all going above and beyond the basic hammam experience. I opted for the “Royal Hammam Ritual,” and let me tell you, it was truly royal.
The experience started off with a relaxing soak in a warm steam room, followed by a gentle black soap application and body scrub. But here’s the thing – the scrubbing wasn’t some rough and tumble affair.
The therapist used a light touch, making it feel more like a massage than an exfoliation. I could tell that the amazing argan oil was pure, as it left my skin feeling silky smooth.
No hammam experience is complete without a good rinse, and the Spa Royal Mansour takes this to the next level.
Forget just a bucket and a hose—they have a dedicated showering area with rainfall showers and luxurious bath products. It’s like stepping out of a steamy hammam and into a five-star hotel bathroom.
I know that Spa Royal Mansour isn’t for everyone’s budget. It’s definitely pricey, but you do get what you pay for. It’s absolutely worth the price. So, if you have the option and you’re looking for a truly unique and luxurious hammam experience, this is the place to go.
5. Hammam de la Rose
📍Location: Dar El Bacha, 130, Marrakech 40000
⌚Hours: 10 AM–8 PM
⭐Rating: 4.1 out of 5
Right in the middle of the Medina, you’ll find Hammam de la Rose tucked away amidst the narrow alleys. It’s pretty easy to find, even though it’s in the middle of the maze. This bathhouse struck the perfect balance between the traditional hammam and a spa.
Stepping inside, I felt like I was transported to a whole new world. The place is beautifully decorated with traditional Moroccan touches, but it also has a modern feel. It’s clean, spacious, and has a calming ambiance that instantly melts away the city noise. You won’t feel crowded or rushed here, which is a big plus for me.
The spa offers a variety of treatments, but I felt like getting the regular Hammam Beldi. The staff was professional and made sure I was comfortable throughout the whole process. The scrub wasn’t too hard, but I still felt ultra-clean and oh-so-smooth.
I saw many tourists asking questions and was pleased when the staff answered politely. They are truly helpful and extremely patient with their guests. Hammam de la Rose offers something a traditional hammam wouldn’t – a proper relaxation area.
After the scrub, you can unwind in a beautiful room with comfy seating and sip on some refreshing mint tea. It’s the perfect way to end your hammam experience.
Overall, Hammam de la Rose is a fantastic choice if you’re looking for a clean, relaxing, and authentic hammam experience in the heart of Medina.
6. Farnatchi Spa
📍Location: 60 Souk Ahl Fes, Marrakech 40000
⌚Hours: 11 AM–7 PM
⭐Rating: 4.5 out of 5
This place isn’t your typical hammam. Farnatchi spa is geared towards complimenting Moroccan heritage with modern techniques.
I found that it was a truly exceptional experience. It’s in a quieter part of the city, so I felt that I was already calm before reaching. That’s opposed to weaving through crowds to get to the other hammams in Medina. To reach this spa, I took a serene stoll.
Vaulted ceilings and stunning marble welcomed me as I entered the spa. The treatment rooms were tranquil, so I was ready to get pampering. The combination of traditional Moroccan elements and modern touches creates a serene and welcoming ambiance.
From the intricate tilework to the soothing lighting, every detail is designed to promote relaxation.
The world-class therapists use specialist products to give a balance between the Moroccan and the international spa experience.
The facilities are impeccably maintained, and the staff takes great care to ensure that everything is sanitized and disinfected. This is particularly important in a hammam environment, where cleanliness is paramount.
What truly sets Farnatchi Spa apart is the additional pampering after the traditional hammam ritual. They offer a variety of massages, specifically like the “Deep Tissue Massage” or the “Sports Massage.”
I opted for the “Classic Massage,” and it was pure bliss. The therapist worked out all the knots and tension I didn’t even know I had.
I’d say this is a fantastic choice for anyone looking for a luxurious and tailored hammam experience. You’ll be able to escape the city noise, unwind, and indulge in some serious pampering.
7. The Four Seasons Spa
📍Location: 1 Av. de la Ménara, Marrakech
⌚Hours: 11 AM–8 PM
⭐Rating: 4.0 out of 5
A brand name familiar to travelers worldwide, The Four Seasons is well-known for its exceptional service. So, I went into this spa with high expectations.
I knew it wouldn’t be a purely traditional hammam, but I was not disappointed. They took the hammam experience to a whole new level of luxury.
They use all-natural Moroccan products, and the therapists are absolute pros. They know what they’re doing and make sure the whole experience is super relaxing. But here’s what really sets them apart—customization.
Unlike some other hammams where it’s a one-size-fits-all scrub, the Four Seasons tailor the treatment to your specific needs.
They ask you about your preferences – pressure level, areas you want focused on – and adjust the treatment accordingly. No more feeling like a rough washcloth is getting applied to your skin!
The heated hammam stones are an incredible addition that was great at relieving my sore muscles. It’s like getting a deep tissue massage. The relaxation area is comfy with private terraces that overlook the garden. I sipped mint tea to complete my serene spa day.
Now, the Four Seasons Spa isn’t cheap, that’s for sure. But for the level of service, customization, and pure relaxation you get, it’s definitely worth it if you’re looking to splurge on yourself.
8. La Mamounia
📍Location: Avenue Bab Jdid, Marrakech 40040
⌚Hours: 9 AM–9 PM
⭐Rating: 4.5 out of 5
Now, this felt like a journey through history;.. The ornate entrance gave me the impression that I was entering a secret palace chamber.
I particularly liked the delicate stucco detailing and hanging lanterns. Serenity reigns supreme in this hammam, and it’s obvious from the get-go.
The bathhouse itself is a marvel of traditional design. The heated marble floors and steam-filled air create a sense of cleansing warmth.
The skilled therapists, dressed in crisp white uniforms, guide you through the classic hammam ritual. But La Mamounia adds a touch of luxury – the black soap is infused with fragrant rosewater, and the Kessa glove exfoliation feels invigorating rather than harsh.
The therapists here are descendants of generations of hammam attendants, so they know their stuff. La Mamounia might come with a high price tag, but this was an upscale yet traditional experience that’s worth it. This historical ambiance, luxurious touches, and skilled staff are what set this place apart.
9. Les Bains D’Orient
📍Location: 214 Arset Aouzal Rd, Marrakech 40030
⌚Hours: 10 AM–8 PM
⭐Rating: 4.6 out of 5
Before I tell you about the amazing hammam I got here, I need to describe the decor. Forget the stark white walls and sterile atmosphere of some modern spas.
Les Bains D’Orient is an assault on the senses in the best way possible. It felt like I was in an oriental painting: intricate mosaics and the heady scent of orange blossom and rosewater.
The hammam is much more holistic than any other spa I’ve been to. It focuses not only on physical cleansing but also on a journey for all the senses. The warm steam room isn’t filled with simple vapor.
Instead, it is infused with fragrant herbs like eucalyptus and mint. The aromas opened up my airways and allowed me to truly relax.
The traditional black soap scrub is also elevated. They offer a variety of infused options, such as orange blossom or rose, each adding a unique layer of scent and nourishment to the experience.
Imagine the feeling of invigorating exfoliation combined with the gentle caress of a floral perfume, all while enveloped in the warmth of the steam room.
Beyond the traditional hammam, Les Bains d’Orient offers a treasure trove of unique treatments. Their “Rêve d’Orient” (Dream of the Orient) experience takes you on a multi-sensory journey with a black soap scrub; a rose water-infused massage, and a finale of heady argan oil application – a treatment fit for royalty.
The hushed tones of fellow bathers, the gentle chatter of the staff, and the calming water sounds create a symphony of tranquility, allowing you to focus on rejuvenation truly.
If you’re looking for a hammam experience that goes beyond the basic scrub, Les Bains d’Orient is a must-visit.
